Question Learning Guide to building Modules

Not sure if these questions are over the top, but I would love to learn to build my own modules now that we have the "Page Modules Display, Update and Create" page. What would be a good skeleton layout to use in order for us to create a very first module?

Also, what would be a good starting point in creating an advance search module? So that the advance search features can appear on all pages? I tried copying the code in catalog/advance_search.php to a new file I created in catalog/includes/modules/ advanced_search.php. But no luck so far...
