Changing the Product List Layout

Hi

Apologies if this is a dumb question. I suspect it may be.

I would like to change the product list column layout. There are two kinds of changes:

1. Styling - for this I am pretty sure I can solve most using the css; and
2. More complex layout such as use of tables/divs to adjust layout - for example to have the image thumb appear left of the text.

I have trawled the forums and the docs as best I can. I think the answer to my question is "Go modify product_listing_col.php ". If this is the case, is there a way I can override the existing one (in case a new version comes out etc) or do I replace the one that is there.

Alternatively, can I use a template of some sort - I couldn't see in the code where a template was loaded.
