Category and New Product Display?

I am just a newbie at oscmax and I am wondering if anyone could give me some tips. I've installed and uploaded my innovatory through myphpadmin and no items come up in my new products list on the main page and Im not sure how to fix that. I am also wondering if there is anyway to display my category pics (kinda like the new products, but on top of the page) on the main page.
Any help would be great thanks.

install oscmax and then add products and categories through admin catalog panel
