changing inventory function

Hi There!

I am looking to make a pretty unusual modification to the way the inventory function works. I need a mod that will do the following:

1. take inventory out of stock when a customer hits the "add to cart" button (instead of after checkout)

2. Return inventory to stock if the customer empties their cart or after 24 hours if they have not checked out.

Any ideas if this is possible in OSC? And if so, where should I start? LOL I know virtually no php... just enough to install mods/additions/etc
