BTS: Different Layout for Main Site Page

When I first get to my site, I want that main page to have a different layout than the rest of the pages. I want 2 columns and a reduced number of boxes in the left column. On all the rest of the pages, I want to keep the standard 3-column layout with the standard set of boxes defined in column_left.php.

Any ideas on how to do this?

I've answered all my own questions today except this one which has me stumped. Can anyone shed some light on this?
