how to place an order for a customer?

I frequently speak to customers on the phone or via e-mail and then create graphics for them. I'd like to be able to (1) create an account for new customers and (2) enter an order for the customer so that all they have to do is log in and check out.

What is the best way to do this?

Search the contributions section at http://www.oscommerce.com. I've seen a few solutions for what your wanting there...

If you do add a contribution to Max and get it up and running please post the changes, I would like to add this feature also ... and if I beat you to it I will list which contribution and the Max files that need to be mod'd
