Default Changing Status when Quantity of Item is 0

I have read that people don't want it to delete, they want the item to stay listed, but just not allow them to check out. My reading of it makes me think that by default, the status changes to red when a 0 quantity is met. But I can't get mine to do this. Anybody know how to get this to work. I am selling used items in specific categories, and if I did that, they would be paging thru 20 + pages for each categorie (atleast some) especially when I don't have stock of them.

So what I am saying, how can I setup my osCommerce Max 1.5.5 to change the status to red when the 0 quantity is met.

    Thanks, Corey
