    Default Moving a website

    Hello All,

I am new to OSCommerce. In fact I have not even installed it yet but it looks good from what I can see. I have two questions. The first is what is the best version to install?

The next is a little more complicated I think. I have a W2K install with Apache, PHP4 and a XP system running MySQL 4.x. I want to build the site in house first then move it to another host. I guess my questions are how hard is it to move once you get it up and running? What pitfalls should I watch out for? When ready to have it hosted what should I look for in a hosting solution?

    Thanks,

    Zych

Moving OSC MAX is a simple affair.

    1. create database at new host. (easiest if you use same database name, username and password as original DB)

    2. FTP all files up to new host.

    3. Rerun the install script (for newbs, or edit the 2 configure.php's for the more advanced) **MAKING SURE TO DE-SELECT THE OPTION TO IMPORT TEST DATA**

    4. rename the install directory to install_old (to get rid of error messege)

    5. chmod the /includes/configure.php file to 755 (to get rid of other error message)

    6. Grab cold drink and relax...

As far as hosting companies go, both myself and msasek specialize in hosting catered to E-commerce customers. I myself, having written the last few releases of the linkpoint payment gateway for OSC, make sure that CURL, PHP, LINUX, OPENSSL and all other functions needed for a smooth running shop are kept up to date with the latest patches on all our servers.

I have the same basic question except....I have made changes to the templates and lots of other files. I have added the newest BTS. I have added a mod to take the CVV number from credit cards.

Those changes mean I have a non-stock DB. How do I move the DB as well as the PHP files?

Plus, I won't be able to give the DB the same name because the new server forces a prefix onto the DB name. What issues does this create?

    Thx,
    Tim

    nfmq:

It is easy - BACKUP your database on your "test" server (eather in phpMyAdmin or in OSC admin panel).

Then on your NEW server - upload all files from your test - INCLUDING the BACKUP file.

Two ways to load the database:

    a) If you intend to use OSC to load the file (via the Admin panel) - remember to also upload the INSTALL directory too. Use the install to setup the configure.php files (with your new servers url and database settings) and to load the DEFAULT database! Go INTO the ADMIN (with the default user & p/w) and use the ADMIN Backup to "restore" from file (as made from your test system as above). When done - Exit and go back in and test...

    b) Manually edit & save both CONFIGURE.PHP files to match your server and database settings. Use your MySQL admin tool (like phpMyAdmin) and open up the database (which should be blank) and "run" a quiry and use the FILE saved from OSC or your prior backup. When done - Exit and go in OSC and test...

    Good Luck.

Use PHPmyADMIN to dump the database at old server, making sure to select all tables and "INCLUDE FULL INSERTS". save this file to your hard drive, it will be what you use to populate the DB at new host. then FTP all files and edit the config.php's with new info or follow step 3 in my original post.
