Default mainpage.php bug?

I'm going through and editing MS2 MAX 1.5 to setup my store. When I change mainpage.php under the /catalog/includes/laguages/english folder, something funny happens. If I leave the first two lines

"This is the AABox MS2-MAX v1.5 distribution of osCommerce 2.2 MS2. This version was originally constructed by Michael Sasek for AABox Web Hosting .

MS2-MAX v1.5 contains many contributions and has been modified to enhance the usability and function of osCommerce. MS2-MAX v1.5 has all the bugfixes and patches from v1.0 incorporated, plus the following mods have been added:"

the bottom part of the page works fine.

If I remove those two lines, the bottom part of the page looks terrible. By bottom part, I mean date and powered by oscommerce sections. The "request" count gets bunched up on the right of the page making the date bar 5 lines high. The bottom cloud graphic no longer stays aligned to the center table (I haven't changed the layout, just colors) and is tiled across the screen. What gives? I'm just changing the text, but it looks like it's affecting stuff after it?

yes, I tried that as well. Same thing happens. I commented out the first two <P> blocks and added my own text and it seems to be working.
