Selling standard and custom products, how?

I'm thinking of offering both readymade products and custom(ized) products in the webstore. Is there any module for customized version of products or do people usually add information like the longer delivery time into the product description?

For heavily customized items (more changes than just an unusual colour option), it would be nice for the customer if they could send the relevant information (e.g. custom measurements) either with the order or have it (in case of the information being reusable for them) stored somewhere in their account information. Is there any module that allows either one of those or will I have to write my own?

There is a MOD that allows to send text/comments as item attributs. This was used for personaling something like shirts or mugs with a name or saying....
