Default OSC not remembering shopping cart content, or merging them

I have been setting up my store locally on Win2K / Apache 1.3.28 etc.

When I add products to my basket as Guest, then go to checkout it prompts me to log on, informing me that the 'visitor cart will be merged with my member cart'.

Once I log on, my shopping cart turns out to be EMPTY! It does not merge them!

I just checked if it remembered my shopping cart at all, and no, it does not. After being logged on and adding a bunch of stuff to my cart, then logging off, then back on again to check if the stuff is still there, my cart turns out to be empty!

Help! what could be the problem?? My server has Apache 1.3.23.
Locally it works fine! On-line, I ran the install script (to create the tables in MySQL) and afterwards restored my database backup.

Default some more info

I think I'm saving sessions in the DATABASE on-line, and in FILES locally.
Does this have any effect?

The problem is sessions. It is not being carried over, so change the sessions settings until it works.

Default Wow quick answer! more info

heh that was quick! my settings look ok, and i dont really want to use file based session tracking as there are a few domains and databases on this server..
what do you suggest I try changing??

heres some more info... current settings are;

Session Directory /tmp
Force Cookie Use False
Check SSL Session ID False
Check User Agent False
Check IP Address False
Prevent Spider Sessions True
Recreate Session True

i have noticed that the server has considerably older versions of everything, namely;

Server OS: Linux 2.4.18-3
MySQL 3.23.49

HTTP Server: Apache/1.3.23 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) mod_ssl/2.8.7 OpenSSL/0.9.6b DAV/1.0.3 PHP/4.1.2 mod_perl/1.26

locally I run

HTTP Server: Apache/1.3.28 (Win32)
PHP Version: 4.3.4 (Zend: 1.3.0)
Database: MySQL 4.0.15-nt

will the different servers have any effect?

My bad, my local install also uses database session storage.

So there is virtually nothing between local and on-line stores! Is it the software differences!?

Default cURL

one last thing..
locally i am NOT using curl, and the online server IS.

i have noticed that a massive URL does not appear online, while locally it does. (with all the random session letters)
