My suggestion for the "final solution" is that the PayPal payment module is updated and "simulates" the returning customer upon recieving IPN information from PayPal (IPN never fails).
This way, order confirmation would be sent out, and stock reduced automatically, when customer paid, NOT when he/she returned.
