Default New and ready to learn!

Hello, I have been running into problems with our current cart so often that I decided to take on the challange of upgrading to oscmax. I have been doing well in the process.

    current site is www.healingnoi.com

my test site is Healing Noni :

    1. I set up osc max.

    2. I made folders of old site and new site ( for quick and easy back up for when I break things )

    3. intalled master password

    4. i installed links manager

    5. working on template configurations.

    6. I needed to mimick the right side bar as we have it with a string of product links. figured out that i could do this by adding the code into main.tpl.php quite by accident as I was trying to make it an info box

    7. would like to be able to chose what pages the info boxes show up on. (found BTS Template Tutorial, Examples, converting osC template to BTS)

    8. not sure yet how to turn them off - but imagine I'll remove the code for the info box and that will work.

    9. tried to install wolfen feature set and seems ok , i mean the site isn't broken/ but I can't see that anything has changed/ i can turn on the categories as features / but nothing is showing up for them. and as far as position and rows and columns I have no idea where to do that

    10. wanted to use categories for the front page / as we have it with the old site/ couldn't' figure out how to install that on oscmax

    11. have much more to accomplish and any insight and encouragement is greatly appreciated.

thank you for the opportunity to share in this project.

    Aloha,

    John

    Welcome.
Like many, you need to get a handle on images (Categories in particular).
    "524px × 700px (scaled to 100px × 133px)" for example.
It appears my auto-thumbnail routine could be useful for Category and Manufacturers images.

Your template is setup incorrectly for Wolfen FS - look at the code in the fallback template.

    1.
strangely enough I figured out the wolfen FS/ it was correct all along i think. i just didn't have any products in my catagories. It actually didn't do what I thought it did. But now that I understand what it does. It may or may not be useful to me.

    2. Made even more back up folders/ kind of getting the habit of utilizing backup folders into rotuine. today I practiced with sql back ups// I haven't had much need to do that// and had been very intimidated by moving to a new host anytime that might happen// you know what i did. I moved the test site to my private host to test merging data bases// Ha I figured that out and now have faith in my data base back ups/ you may not remember the feeling before you understand completely that a data base seems fragile and breakable especially to the naked eye/ today i can't build on / but i sure can resurrect if need be

    3. I don't know exactly how this happened / oh yeah i do// i placed a // thinking i could comment out the new product line/ and it showed up on on my page at the top of catalog - well so i figured i could do more than that - so in my search through this path I figured out how to install the front page categories! Then to save time grabbed the front page categories php from current site and replaced the test site copy// perfect / looks just like the old site / plus the added benefit that the Define main page was not harmed so I can still edit that to say what ever I want it to say.

strange - it also removed the left column and the code I placed html for products/ but this is great / i didn't want that on that page/ and it is still on all the other pages / so great!

    4. learned how to add extra mainpage.tpl's I can see that being very usefull

    5. no luck figuring out how to merge old data base with new/ still looking

    6. no luck figuring out how to install quantity price breaks / the code for the groups seems to be in the way and I can't get my mind around where to place the code/ anyone done this?

    7. I think that is all for now// thank you!

    ozogo,

Ridex was refering to the image on your home page which you are scaling using the browser.

Basically it is over 200kb for a small image which will slow your site down. It is best to scale the images to the correct size and then upload them.

Also download yourself a copy of Firefox and get YSlow! for it - it does a very good job of optimising your images for you - makes you site faster and the user experience better.

Other than that - welcome to oscmax!

    Regards,
    pgmarshall

I realize that - Thanks, I wasn't very worried about images at that point and uploaded the wrong one/ I"ve since corrected that and will be more aware. I'll get YSlow also.

Dunno if you're good at hiding the code but a cursory glance over the site suggests that you are bypassing the (BTS) template system. Also, not a lover of Slimbox, I take it.

Images are a major improvement, though.

I am not trying to bypass BTS / I'm integrating the earliry site to the osmax I just don't have time and need to get it working so that I can make changes while live toward a more completely bts based system - I will be tranfering the articles to the article manager. I don't really know how to work the bts yet and I don't know no what the slim box is? If any one would like to help me complete this project please let me know as I'm now needing it done this week and personally haven't the skill to do transfer oscommerse database to oscmax yet.

    Thanks,

    John

    1. I was able to get the mysqldiff working / but can not run it// I get these errors:

I have no idea/ seems a step was missing : there is a field of options in mysqldiff and I wonder how those are ment to be set. is that why i'm getting the error?

    I don't know.

Any insight that will help me through this difficulty please?
