Hosting plans with installation, configuration, contributions, support and maintenance.
I agree! You don't need anything as big as a PC to run a server - I've got one running on a memory stick! To test out osCmax you can try MAMP, WAMP, LAMP or a free web service (although every time I have tried the free online route - it has ended in tears)A PC in the corner, does not a server make.
Have a crack at both ... But I can confirm that you can follow The wiki instructions and be up and running in under 10 minutes on a mac running MAMP.
Hope you like what you see!
Regards.

Personally on my Mac I run Parallels (bought it when it first came out) with Windows XP (and also Windows 2000, 7 Enterprise, the NEW Windows 8 Del version and more...)
And in XP I have running EasyPHP and using UltraEdit, Beyond Compare, Adobe Design Premium/Dreamweaver and phpRunner (for building other quick php applications)
I use windows - cause the tools that I find easiest to work with is NOT available nativity on the MAC.
I also have Virtual Box on my PC with All of the above too... (nice cause it can run virtual machine images from Parallel or MS or Oracle)
Note: Virtual Box is available for free for Mac OSX as well.... Download and Install it... Download Windows 8 Del - or Virtual Package of XP w/IE6 from Microsoft (available 100% free from MS downloads directly!!!!)
Good Luck

thanks to all - I have managed to install it. Like PGMarshall I hope to do some development using my mac as a server.
I just have a couple of errors...
Error: I am able to write to the configuration file: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/catalog/home/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file.

I have read through various instructions however they are "PC speak" to me does anyone know what to do in "Mac speak"? Is there a Mac instruction manual?

You don't need a Mac instruction manual - osCmax is running on MAMP not your Mac. Try right clicking the configure files -> Get Info -> Sharing & Permission -> Read Only. Regards.
